05.07.10 - Assessment of energy savings and potential energy generation for the town of Guben.

Energy is the basis for urban life and economic activity. The supply of energy to cities is normally organised on a supraregional level for electricity, gas and oil. Climate change and limited energy resources are affecting urban development. The prime objective for many cities is to achieve an independent, cost-effective and sustainable energy supply and efficient energy consumption.

Current and future energy consumption for households, public services, private companies and transport was determined for the town of Guben (Eastern Germany). The potential energy savings and the opportunities for the region to produce renewable energies were identified.

Urban renovation in energy terms influences important elements of the urban development in Guben, incl. new buildings and existing buildings, development of residential areas and mobility. The town was shown how energy as-pects can be integrated in the long-term processes of ur-ban planning, urban redevelopment and securing the sup-ply of energy.

The project was carried out in cooperation with stakeholders in the town of Guben. Practical measures for implementation were elaborated with the client and proposals for raising awareness of local decision-makers were formulated.
