23.08.07 - Ernst Basler + Partner helps to establish a gateway terminal in Limmattal to accommodate further increases in container transport demand.

Globalisation is causing fast-growing transport flows worldwide. Many goods are shipped by container over the oceans and transferred to rail and road in the major ports of Europe. Shuttle trains bring these containers to Switzerland to a gateway terminal, where they are forwarded to the end customers by wagon-load freight transport or lorry. In the near future the SBB expects further increases in container transport demand. They want to profit from, and plan for this development by establishing a gateway terminal in Limmattal on the site of the marshalling yard. Our tasks:

  • Support for the project manager of the SBB Infrastructure section (leading mandate)
  • Drawing up the principles for choosing the best option - Road traffic volume, transport development - Environment (noise, water, contamination, light) - Infrastructure systems, including replacement measures - Logistics (crane systems, gateway operating concept, check-in area, IT systems)
  • Evaluation of the options and recommendation
  • Preparation of calls for tender for the preliminary project
  • Specialist assistance to the engineers responsible for drawing up the preliminary project
