Zurich University Hospital as a Research and Teaching Centre: Long-term structural development concept for Zurich’s University District

Working together with the University of Zurich, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) and Zurich University Hospital, EBP is drafting a long-term, structural development concept for the University Hospital as a place of medical research and teaching in Zurich’s University District.

The University Hospital is the main focus of development in Central Zurich’s University District. The goal is to secure the structural and operational conditions that are necessary to maintain and enhance the outstanding quality associated with the Zurich University Hospital (UMZH) when it comes to medical care, medical research and teaching. One of the most important quality indicators is the institutional and geographical association shared by the University of Zurich (UZH), the University of Zurich Medical School (USZ) and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) in Zurich’s University District.

Working from an established master plan, the three institutions are currently drafting a long-term structural development concept “UMZH Research + Teaching” under the direction of the UZH. The aim is to define principal areas of research, establish the location of resource clusters (i.e. with an eye to promoting enhanced cooperation) and work out the schedule of various construction phases up to the year 2035. It will also be important to develop organisational and operational principles. The concept will serve as a basis for architectural design competitions for projects in Zurich’s University District.

EBP is providing substantive and organisational support to the University of Zurich in the context of this process. Specific responsibilities include the following:

  • Process development and management
  • Working out a substantive basis (e.g. with the help of interviews)
  • Drafting scenarios
  • Chairing of committees, including preparation and moderation of workshops
  • Documentation and visualisation of the development concept
