Outlook 2050 for the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment

Mandated by the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment, we are drawing up a set of basic principles for long-term perspectives in environment and resource policies.

The future state of the environment and natural resources is shaped by decisions made and activities undertaken today. Natural processes as well as social, technical and institutional changes are long time processes, and therefore a long-term perspective and a good planning is crucial for the development of environmental and resource policies. The objective of the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (SFOE) is to strengthen the long-term planning of its environmental and resource policies, and therefore, they initiated the project “Outlook 2050”. As an initial stage, three selected subject areas are evaluated: biodiversity, climate and raw materials.

The current status and the relevant trends and determinants (drivers, pressures) are being analysed for each of these three subject areas. Possible scenarios are developed and respective objectives for the year 2050 defined. Finally, key decisions for future developments and strategic actions are identified.

Mandated by the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment, we are leading the process to develop tools and methods for looking at long-term visions and deriving the need for Action.
