New integrated transportation strategy for St.Gallen

In the interest of gaining greater control over traffic development within the canton, the St.Gallen cantonal government has drafted its first integrated transportation strategy. EBP was assigned to coordinate the process together with the various cantonal agencies.

Common guideline for future development

The purpose of the integrated transportation strategy is to establish a guideline for all transportation-related development planning and operations within the Canton of St.Gallen. The strategy is to be adhered to primarily by government officials and administrators working on behalf of government agencies. Owing to its interdisciplinary nature, the drafting of the strategy required the active input of multiple agencies in the cantonal government.

Integrated transportation strategy for sustainable development

The main aim of the new strategy is to enable the government to shape the canton’s transportation system to better account for settlement development and to better meet the needs of all transportation-system users. The aim is to adopt measures and manage operations in such a way as to achieve a more efficient allocation of limited resources.

In order to achieve the stated objectives, the parties involved in the drafting process used the cantonal constitution as well as the canton’s formal sustainable development policy as a basis for the following four primary goals:

  • Secure transportation access within the canton and to all relevant points outside the canton.
  • Reduce energy and resource consumption, as well as sources of stress to people and the environment.
  • Protect the safety and needs of all transportation-system users.
  • Improve the cost effectiveness of public resource allocation and ensure the affordability of public transportation services.

These were then used to derive a set of planning principles and strategic approaches to help secure sustainable development in all of the canton’s regions.

EBP organizes a series of workshops

The contents of the integrated transportation strategy were worked out by the various agencies in the framework of seven workshops and two special events involving the participation of key stakeholders in transportation sector. EBP conceived and managed the process, provided important technical support and drafted the text of the integrated transportation strategy.
