Assessing the utility of biogas plants

Do biogas plants represent an effective means of helping us reach our sustainable energy goals? Working on behalf of the Swiss Federal Office of Energy, we examined the available literature on the utility of biogas plants as a basis for drafting an overview of their advantages and disadvantages. After examining the literature, we assessed the end products of biogas plants (biogas fuel and digestate for the production of organic fertilizer) in terms of their availability, carbon footprint, climate-protection benefits, soil fertility, nutrient-cycle closure, production costs, and customer appeal.
