Sludge processing in Cyprus

Cyprus has proposed to Switzerland the co-financing of a new sludge processing plant. We evaluate the Cypriot project proposal from an environmental point of view and assess its feasibility.

As part of the Swiss enlargement contribution to the new EU member states, Cyprus has proposed to Switzerland the co-financing of a new sludge processing plant.
The new plant will be used mainly for the environmentally-friendly disposal of sludge for rural municipalities in the hinterland of Limassol. It will contribute to the ability of Cyprus to comply with the EU environmental standards.
The co-financing by Switzerland will make it possible to keep the usage fees for the plant relatively low in the start-up phase, and also to maintain them at an affordable level for rural municipalities.
Our task was to assess the environmental objectives of the Cypriot project proposal and to evaluate its feasibility in terms of technical, institutional, organisational and financial considerations.
