Khujand Water Company in Tajikistan

EBP is entrusted with the overall project management and construction supervision of Khujand drinking water network Rehabilitation.

In Soviet times Khujand received drinking water and wastewater infrastructure. During their communist past water was free of charge. Today water prices are still low. Low prices however inhibit the badly needed rehabilitation of the infrastructure and in the long term compromise the survival of the water utility.

The use of water meters shall allow the introduction of a billing system based on the quantity of water consumed. In this way the water prices can be raised in a socially more acceptable way: The consumers will be able to offset the price increase by using it more efficiently and economically.

Khujand Water Company therefore as part of this project receives 27’000 domestic water meters, 53 km of pipes as well as fittings, valves and pumps. 5 new boreholes will be drilled with pumps installed. The team of EBP and its local partners is entrusted with the following tasks:

  • Tendering and procurement of the necessary equipment
  • Construction supervision
  • Overall project management

Renewed pipes will reduce losses and the water meters will encourage customers to use less water. Reduced losses and reduced consumption will lead to increased pressure in the drinking water network. Increased pressure means that more households will benefit from convenient drinking water supply 24 hours per day.
