“Trackside Tribune” project at Zollstrasse in Zurich: structural engineering

he scope of the project includes the construction of three new buildings offering space for 140 apartments, a restaurant and various stores and small businesses. The three buildings and a neighboring building are to be joined by a common underground level that is located directly adjacent to the metropolitan railway tunnel. The three towers are to feature six to eight upper levels rendered in a conventional solid construction. The entire underground structure is to be given an elastic suspension to achieve acoustic decoupling.

Despite the complex geometry of the upper levels and the different uses in the building’s upper, ground and underground levels, the architects and engineers succeeded in developing a load-bearing structure without girder floors. The excavation pit directly adjacent to the railway tunnel has been outfitted with a deformation-resistant support structure that will require a precise management of the construction sequences.
