Cantonal structure plan for Energy for the City of Bern

The City of Bern intends to obtain the majority of its heating energy and electricity from renewable sources by 2035. To this end, EBP is developing the Masterplan for Energy of the City of Bern, in close cooperation with the local authorities and energy suppliers.

The City of Bern has set itself ambitious objectives for its energy supply – not only does it intend to obtain at least 80% of its electricity from renewable energies by 2035, but it will also cease to use nuclear power. The City would also like to generate at least 70% of its heat from renewable energies. The aims are also high in respect of demand – electricity consumption should only increase by 5% between now and 2035; heat requirements should be reduced by 20%. The way in which the City of Bern is to achieve these objectives is the subject of the cantonal structure plan for Energy.

The Masterplan for Energy is an official, binding spatial planning instrument that forms the guiding principle for the city’s energy supply and use for the next 25 years. It will ensure that regional development and energy use are better coordinated, energy efficiency increased and renewable energy sources promoted.

Under instructions from the Office of Environmental Protection, EBP has supported the process of development of the cantonal structure plan for Energy for the City of Bern. Together with Panorama AG, the engineering practice INES and the consultancy bureau Georegio, basic principles energy Scenarios were developed and evaluated and measures defined.

The Masterplan Energy for the City of Bern has been developed in close cooperation with the local authorities and energy suppliers. Platforms for public exchanges and discussions are being established in various locations.
