Master Plan for University District in Central Zurich

The three major institutions in Zurich’s University District – ETH Zurich, the University of Zurich and the Zurich University Hospital – need more space to meet their development needs. EBP is helping the canton, city and educational institutions to draft a master plan for the future of Zurich’s University District.

The further development of Zurich’s centrally located University District is especially challenging owing to the spatial and developmental interests of the various educational institutions involved, including ETH Zurich, the University of Zurich and the Zurich University Hospital, as well as other complex factors relating to urban development, public access and traffic congestion.

The decision on the part of the Executive Council to keep the Zurich University Hospital in the district and the growing demands for space on the part of the various educational institutions require the establishment of strategic guidelines for the district’s development. EBP managed the district planning process that led to an adaptation of the existing master plan for the University District and the related cantonal development plan.

To establish a basis for the new master plan, EBP supervised three urban development studies that were completed to establish a spatial representation of the new needs of the academic institutions, the City of Zurich and the Canton of Zurich.

EBP supported those responsible for project and process management when it came to adapting the master plan and the cantonal development plan, and then went on to draft the master plan in consultation with the relevant city development offices and architectural firms.
