Adaptation to Climate Change in the City of Zurich

In a case study carried out in cooperation with Umwelt- und Gesundheitsschutz Zürich (Zurich Environmental and Health Protection Agency), EBP examined the needs that arise in the city of Zurich in relation to the adaptation to climate Change.

Together with Umwelt- und Gesundheitsschutz Zürich (UGZ), EBP carried out a case study on the possible effects of climate change on the city of Zurich. This case study is part of a research project carried out by EBP on adaptation to climate change. For the UGZ, the case study follows on from the project «Klimaanalyse der Stadt Zürich» (Climate Analysis of the City of Zurich). The aim of the case study was to provide a survey of the possible consequences of climate change for the City of Zurich. The report describes possible measures that were discussed in interviews and workshops with representatives of the city administration. The study recommends possible short-term, medium-term and long-term action requirements for Zurich in respect of climate change adaptation.

The fields examined by the case study were «health», «buildings and energy», «water supply», «green spaces» and «technical infrastructure». Various urban authorities were involved in the analysis. Interviews were conducted on the possible effects of climate change in the different fields. The need for adaptation to, and consequences of, climate change with relation to three focus topics were also discussed in workshops. Strategies and instruments, which are already in use in the city of Zurich, were presented along with the adaptation requirements.
