What and how great are the climate-related risks and opportunities in the Canton of Aargau? EBP analysed them, thus contributing to the climate-related risk analysis for the whole of Switzerland for the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment
Climate change is already measurable today. The environment, people and businesses in Switzerland will have to adapt to the changing conditions during the course of the 21st century. In order to identify the need for action in relation to this adaptation, the effects of climate change and the associated risks and opportunities were assessed and compared on the instructions of the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (BAFU). The areas with the greatest need for action could thus be identified and priorities set for adaptation in Switzerland.
In the Aargau case study, the risks and opportunities in the Canton of Aargau for the year 2060 were analysed to provide an example for the Swiss Plateau. This involved firstly defining scenarios for possible climate developments and for the development of the socioeconomic and demographic environment. Next, the effects of climate change on the health, agriculture, forestry, energy, water management, biodiversity and tourism sectors were identified and where possible quantified on the basis of unified indicators. Any uncertainties in the analysis were also determined. Finally, the results, including any uncertainties, were set out for comparison between the sectors covered. The results will contribute to the analysis of the risks and opportunities for the whole of Switzerland. The case study will also provide the canton of Aargau with a basis for canton-wide adaptation to climate change. The pilot project is being handled by EBP together with the SLF (Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research) and Regional Economics and Development risk management research groups of the Federal research institute WSL.
