City of Bern Energy and Climate Strategy 2025

The City of Bern is planning to increase its reliance on renewable sources of energy. Renewable sources are to account for 70 percent of the city’s heating demand and 80 percent of its electricity demand by the year 2035. EBP helped the city to identify the measures that will need to be implemented during the next 10 years.

The City of Bern is planning to shift the focus of its energy supply system to renewable sources of energy. The Bern City Council approved a new energy planning guide on 1 November 2014. This new guide is to be used as a basis for major energy policy revisions. The new planning guide includes a number of ambitious goals:

  • Long-term fulfilment of 2000 Watt Society standards
  • Renewable sources of energy are to account for 70 percent of the city’s heating demand and 80 percent of its electricity demand by the year 2035.

EBP helped the City of Bern devise a strategy for reaching its ambitious goals. The strategy document, known as the Energy and Climate Strategy 2025, outlines concrete measures that are to be implemented during the next 10 years. The relevant stakeholders were given an opportunity to participate in the drafting of the strategy.

The strategy defines the most important areas of action that will need to be accounted for in the city’s energy and climate policy. In contrast to conventional strategies, the new strategy encompasses heating, electricity, and mobility demands.
