Cycle-friendly tram tracks: developer support

The transport operators of the City of Zurich are testing cycle-friendly tram tracks. EBP is providing support for the implementation and evaluation of a field test.

Cycle-friendly tram tracks is a topic that attracts growing interest in the City of Zurich. In particular, where cycle tracks run in parallel along the tram tracks, accidents can be caused by the cycles’ tyres catching in the grooves of the tram tracks. To date, no satisfactory solution has been found for this problem.

During the period from summer 2013 to spring 2014, the transport operators of the City of Zurich (VBZ) carried out a test of a new kind of rail system in the Höngg district of Zurich, whereby infill pieces were inserted in the grooves of the tram tracks to prevent cycle tyres getting caught.

EBP supported the VBZ in the preparation for and implementation of this test. For example, EBP considered the economic benefits of cycle-friendly tram tracks and supported the VBZ’s project management in the evaluation of the test and in the related communications.
