Expert review of the Bözberg tunnel construction project

Working on behalf of Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), EBP has completed a comprehensive statutory   review of the Bözberg tunnel construction project. The review was completed in accordance with the construction engineering guidelines issued the Swiss Federal Office of Transport (FOT) to govern the work of Independent Railway Auditing Agencies, as well as with an eye to verifying project compliance with the European Railway Agency’s Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI/IOP).

The project centers on the new construction of SBB’s Bözberg Tunnel, which is to be built at a location on Switzerland’s main north-south railway. Given the two-track tunnel’s location in a segment of the railway that is subject to European interoperability specifications (e.g. 4-meter clearance specifications), the expert review needed to take account of both Swiss and European Union requirements.

The scope of the project includes the construction of a two-track, predominantly bored tunnel with adjacent cut-and-cover segments, cross cuts, portals and the access routes. Once the work on the new tunnel is complete, the old tunnel is to be transformed into a maintenance-and-rescue tunnel.

Working in close consultation with the client, EBP carried out the statutory review of the project to ensure its compliance with all of the applicable requirements. The result also provides a complete and consistent dossier for the planning approval procedure.
