Between 1961 and 1990, the Swiss city of Opfikon recorded an annual average of 18 days on which the temperature exceeded 30°C (86°F). According to climate-change projections issued by the canton of Zurich, that number could increase to 48 days by the year 2040. In 2020, the city of Opfikon drafted a heat-mitigation strategy aimed at minimizing excessive urban heating and its impact on human health, the economy, and the environment. EBP supported the city to identify the specific challenges linked to heat and to devise appropriate countermeasures. The findings were compiled in a short report to serve as a practical reference work. The report outlines the concrete measures and defines responsibilities. It includes specific proposals for amending the city’s building code and zoning ordinance.
