Impact of HTW Chur on the Regional Economy of Eastern Switzerland

The University of Applied Sciences (HTW) Chur in the Canton of Graubünden has had a positive impact on the economic development of the various cantons in Eastern Switzerland. Working on behalf of HTW Chur, EBP took a closer look at the extent to which the university has helped to support the region’s economic development.

The Canton of Graubünden operates a University of Applied Sciences in the city of Chur. As an educational and research institution, the HTW Chur has to make a contribution to the canton’s economic development and its attractiveness as a place to live and do business. Working together with Northwestern Switzerland’s University of Applied Sciences and Arts, EBP examined HTW Chur’s impact on the economic vitality, job market and innovative capacity of the Canton of Graubünden.

The various data gathered offer a differentiated view of the university’s overall impact. The methods we applied included a regional economic cycle model (input-output model), a network analysis of the relevant stakeholders and an alumni survey. We concluded our assignment by presenting our results to the school’s governing board and cantonal representatives.

In the summer of 2016, the assessment of the university’s value-added effects was updated. The update showed that HTW Chur’s contribution to the cantonal economy had grown.
