Improving the energy efficiency of major consumers in Zurich’s city administration

For 10 years, major consumers of energy that are owned by the city of Zurich have entered target agreements regarding their energy efficiency. EBP has now evaluated this energy-efficiency program and drafted a list of proposals for its further development.

Major consumers of energy in the Canton of Zurich are obligated to improve their energy efficiency. They can either conclude agreements with the canton to meet certain targets or analyze their energy consumption on a one-time basis and implement corresponding economic measures. The Zurich city government decided in 2005 to require its own major consumers of energy to conclude target agreements. The city’s own major consumers include the city’s public transportation operators, the water supply company, the power company and the department of real estate.

On the occasion of the expiration of the initial target agreements, the city’s Department of Energy and Sustainability commissioned an evaluation of the target-agreement program. Working on behalf of the city, EBP analyzed the program and drafted a number of recommendations for its further development.
