National Climate Change Mitigation Program for Sustainable Schools in Chile

With the objective of increasing the comfort of Chilean schools while reducing their greenhouse gas emissions, EBP is supporting public and private schools through the development of a Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMA) for the implementation of mitigation measures.

The approximately 1200 schools in Chile produce an estimated 1.2 million tons of CO2  per year. These emissions come mainly from heating and electricity use. In addition, many of the schools need significant improvements to lighting and heating in order to raise their comfort levels. Finally, the heating systems often produce particulate matter that has negative effects on air quality and human health.

The main goals of the mandate are:

  • To develop a baseline for energy usage and the greenhouse gas emissions produced by the schools;
  • To identify measures for increasing energy efficiency and promoting renewable energy;
  • To develop a financing mechanism for the implementation of identified measures, including the promotion of public-private partnerships.
