People flow analysis for the Wetzikon Vocational School

After being commissioned to examine the preliminary plans for the new construction of the Wetzikon Vocational School in terms of people-flow dynamics, EBP has proposed measures to ensure the optimized circulation of people in the building which is to accommodate around 600 students.

The Zürichsee and Oberland Transportation Company  has commissioned the building of a new bus depot in Wetzikon. The two upper floors of the building are to provide space for classrooms for a vocational school, as well as two sports halls, a cafeteria and a lounge area.

EBP has examined the current status of the building project in terms of people flow. The results of the analyses show the locations at which significant congestion can be expected to arise and what structural and operational measures can be taken to mitigate the congestion.

The results of the analysis were generated by determining the relevant quantity structure and using it as a basis for deriving the flow quality at the various points of congestion such as stairways and corridors. Different scenarios were defined and tested to take account of the daily fluctuations in the number of students in the building.

The analysis also provided a basis for determining waiting times for meal distribution and the associated length of the lines in the cafeteria or in the lounge area. This enabled a specification of the areas in the cafeteria zone that will need to be reserved and also provided information that will be needed in the development of the catering concept in later planning phases.
