Processes and guidelines for BIM@SBB

Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has launched a major digitalization and transformation project known as BIM@SBB to secure the realization of a comprehensive BIM-guided approach to planning and project development. EBP is helping SBB to develop and introduce the new processes.

The SBB has set an ambitious goal. It plans to invest more than CHF 5 million in building information modeling (BIM) to support all of its real-estate projects from 2021 and all of its railway-infrastructure projects from 2025. The company expects the investment to help it achieve significant long-term construction cost (CapEx) and operating cost (OpEx) savings. The intermediate aim of the new BIM@SBB project is to optimize the data consistency behind all of its planning and construction processes through the deployment of BIM databases. This optimization is to apply to all expansion, renovation, and real-estate and infrastructure-maintenance processes.

Structured planning sequences

Working together with digital transformation specialist Sieber&Partners, EBP is helping SBB to structure the necessary planning sequences in the form of business-use cases. We make use of Information Delivery Manual (IDM) process maps to represent the sequences and designate the necessary data objects. In addition to this, we provide support when it comes to drafting the necessary work instructions, specifications, and training concepts, thereby making a contribution to the successful introduction and implementation of the new BIM processes.
