Clearing the site of an old freight terminal to make way for the New Zurich Police and Judiciary Center

Abandoned since 1996, the old freight terminal in the Aussersihl district of Zurich needed to be removed to make way for the new cantonal Police and Judiciary Center, a demolition and clearance project encompassing around 100,000 tons of building fabric. EBP was commissioned to draft a demolition plan, complete the tendering process and supervise the demolition and clearance work on site.

Abandoned since 1996, the old freight terminal in the Aussersihl district of Zurich needed to be removed to make way for the construction of the new cantonal Police and Judiciary Center. The scope of the project included the demolition and clearance of the freight terminal building and the 400-meter halls for incoming and outgoing goods, as well as all of their railway tracks and basement structures. EBP completed the planning for the project, managed the tendering process and supervised all demolition and clearance operations. The clearance of the site was completed in the period from May to September 2013.

It was necessary to remove the old freight terminal buildings, which were built in 1897, from the municipal register of heritage sites in order to realize the new Police and Judiciary Center at the appointed site. The scale of the clearance operation encompassed the demolition and proper disposal of around 100,000 tons of building fabric. The extent of the undertaking made it imperative to develop a demolition and disposal plan and to submit the plan to the local authorities for approval. It was also necessary to draft a construction transport management plan for the demolition and clearance phase so as to enable a verification of compliance with all specifications relating to air-pollution control. As the sales contract between Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and the authorities stipulated that SBB would leave the site in a decontaminated state, special attention was given during the demolition and clearance phases to ascertaining any existing contamination in the building fabric and in the soil.

EBP assumed responsibility for drafting a demolition plan, completing the tendering process and supervising the demolition and clearance work on site.
