What is the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions that is produced by the Justice and Security Department of the Canton of Basel-Stadt? To answer this question, we calculated the carbon footprint of all emission sources in the Department – from the uniforms to the office furniture, the vehicle fleet, and the various department buildings. We then devised a set of measures that could be implemented to improve the department’s carbon footprint. The aim of the project was to arrive at a standardized procedure that could be applied to all of the canton’s administrative departments.
- Calculation of total greenhouse gas produced by the Justice and Security Department
- Application of accepted international standards and methods, e.g. the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Standard and the IPCC’s Global Warming Potential (GWP 100a)
- Representation of the results for climate-relevant factors such as energy, transportation, waste management, water, goods, and infrastructure as per Scope 1, 2 and 3
- Identification and prioritization of measures to effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions
